All-Church Prayer and Fasting
January 8 – 14
We will once again be bringing in the new year with Prayer and Fasting. This year’s theme is 2018 Fast Forward. When we fast it adds wings to our prayers, launching us forward, activating every area of the believer’s life. It will help us to better hear from God and step out in what He calls us to do.
During this fast, our focus isn’t on what we are giving up or on trying to follow a legalistic rule of a fast; but rather our focus is on how we spend the time that we set aside during this season. A fast helps us focus on forward thinking, future progress and moving forward in the right direction. Our goal is to spend more time in the Word, in prayer; intentionally seeking God for His power and purpose in 2018.
There is a deep spiritual purpose for fasting that was not only modeled by Jesus Himself – as He prepared to begin His Ministry (among other times) – but which He also gave us specific instructions about. In Matthew 6:17-18, Jesus said, “But WHEN you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Note that Jesus does not say IF you feel like fasting: He says “WHEN.” Jesus expected that we would fast. Fasting is a God-appointed way to humble ourselves; it removes pride, the barrier to effective prayer.
As important as fasting is in our spiritual development and walk, it is an often overlooked and underutilized spiritual weapon. Therefore, we are setting aside a period of time for our annual church fast, for January 8 through January 14. This fast will put God first in our lives and in our year. We will seek God in a way that will bring about radical change, not only in our personal lives but in this church corporately and flowing out into our families and community. Obedience to God’s Word begins with us!
